Hydrant Flushing

The Marlboro Township Water Utility flushes hydrants annually each spring and typically occurs between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:30 pm.

Hydrant Flushing is part of a routine maintenance to remove any sediment that may accumulate in low flow areas of our water distribution system. This operation maintains the overall water quality in our distribution system and ensures that each fire hydrant operates properly. Customers may notice lower water pressure and a slight discoloration of water as flushing is performed in your area. The discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not affect the water quality. There are no health hazards associated with discolored water from hydrant flushing. If discoloration occurs, simply run the cold water (do not run hot water) from a faucet, tub or shower from highest room in your home until the water runs clear. Prior to using a washing machine or dishwasher, check to see if there is discolored water. During this work, please make sure to keep garbage and recycling containers behind the curb to avoid obstructing drainage along the curb/gutter.

  • What is Hydrant Flushing

Periodically, you will see Water Utility personnel releasing water from hydrants. The process is known as Hydrant Flushing. During flushing activities, hydrants are opened for a limited period at strategic points in the distribution system, moving water through the pipes at a high volume and velocity to exchange/replace water within the system

  • Why are Hydrants Flushed?

Hydrant Flushing is an essential maintenance procedure all water purveyors must perform periodically to ensure the delivery of water that meets state and federal drinking water standards. Hydrant flushing is also performed for the following reasons:

  1. Flushing improves water quality by removing any mineral accumulation such as iron and magnesium that may have developed in the water mains.
  2. Flushing allows utility personnel the ability to inspect the fire hydrants to ensure that they are operational and working correctly. Any deficiencies are noted and repaired as necessary to ensure that each hydrant will perform when needed in an emergency.
  3. A Fire Hydrant is a mechanical device; operation of the hydrant during flushing lubricates internal parts and gaskets.
  4. During flushing old water is flushed from the mains and replaced with new water especially in dead end mains, consequently improving water quality.
  5. Flushing is part of the Distribution System Preventative Maintenance Program and improves system hydraulics.
  • Is the water safe to drink during hydrant flushing?

 Yes, your water is safe to drink. Occasionally, water becomes discolored after hydrant flushing. If this happens, run your cold water tap at a moderate flow rate for a few minutes until the water clears. If it doesn't clear the first time, wait a few minutes and run the water again. You should avoid washing clothes until the water clears.
