Coronavirus Update #43
Dear Resident,
Testing and Stats – New Jersey reported 422 new daily positive test results for a statewide total of 168,107. Monmouth County has 8,830 cases with 488 in Marlboro. Of the Marlboro cases, 439 have cleared, leaving 49 active cases. We remind you that testing is available for all residents. Visit TESTING to find a local testing location.
Today, the Governor announced that as of June 29 retail shopping malls can reopen. Face coverings are required for shoppers and workers, all stores are limited to 50% capacity, and restaurants may provide take-out or outdoor dining. Food court and common seating areas as well as theaters and arcades remain closed.
Restaurants - Many of our restaurants opened this week providing outdoor seating. To assist restaurants in getting back up and running, I issued an Executive Order to allow restaurants to apply for a temporary permit for to open or expand their outdoor dining. This was in addition to fitness centers that were given the same opportunity. The current list of fitness centers and restaurants is HERE. To apply for a temporary permit, please email
Pleasant Valley Road construction is underway. This construction is a part of the State Hospital property project and another step closer to the 411 acres being turned over to the County for a park. The road has been completely closed this week. The road will be closed to thru traffic until July 10 every weekday from 7am - 3pm, except July 3rd for the holiday weekend. Detours are in place, police are on site to direct traffic. Detour routes and more can be found on the Road Repair page HERE.
Parks - We are pleased to announce that Marlin Estates now has 2 dedicated pickleball courts and the basketball and tennis courts have been resurfaced, color coated and restriped. At Nolan Road Park, the two tennis courts have been renovated and lined to include both pickleball and tennis and open for play as additional improvements are pending.
Census 2020 - In several emails, I have asked the township residents to complete the 2020 census. I want to thank Tom Zins of the region census center for coming to our Farmers Market this weekend and reminding residents to complete their form. I am pleased to report that, as of a week ago, 60.9% of households in the US have completed the form, 63.1% in NJ, 66.5% in Monmouth County and 75.5% in Marlboro. I ask the 25% that have not yet responded to please visit 2020census.gov. Completion only takes minutes and determines how billions of federal dollars are divided.
Tonight, at the Township Council meeting, I transmitted, and the Council passed, a resolution which condemns the police actions in Minneapolis that led to the death of George Floyd. The resolution also affirms Marlboro’s commitment to fair, impartial and just treatment of all members of the public by its officers. While we in Marlboro are fortunate to have a police organization that has built up a sense of trust with our residents through a focus on community policing and has invested in ongoing training which includes de-escalation, cultural diversity, and interpersonal communication skills, we recognize that not all towns and cities are the same. The incident in Minneapolis has highlighted the long-standing concerns about the treatment of people of color in their interactions with law enforcement, and this resolution expresses our collective outrage at the killing of George Floyd.
Yours in Community,
Mayor Jon Hornik
